Chapter

XV

Galahad was striding toward us. I shook off a mental image of Huitzilopoctli sit ing atop the Hancock Building while yuppies were hauled up by high-speed elevator to feed his blood-hunger.

I felt embarrassed by the impulse but I wanted Galahad to come and tell me what to do. Someone needed to be in charge. Someone needed to make the decisions. Didn't they? A play needs a director.

David spotted Galahad and came back, too, followed at a wary distance by Senna.

"Loki's forces will attack with the fall of his night," Galahad announced. He looked at me. "I regret that you are drawn into this, lady." He shook his head. "I should not have driven the dragon away. I should have let Merlin take the witch then, for surely more good men will die now to keep her from Loki."

"Let Senna go," David said at once. "Give us a sword and food, we'll walk away, make it on our own."

"The witch can never go free," Galahad said. "Merlin has ordered that should the battle go against us, she will be killed. It is a foul thing to think on. But I am done disputing Merlin's wisdom. Sir Perceval, who has been my friend these many centuries, is dead. And Kay, who was never a friend, but was a brave companion. And others, too. All because I could not see past my hatred of the dragon."

It was the fast sadness or deep worry I'd seen on his face. Maybe looking scared wasn't part of the code of chivalry. But it's not every day you lose a friend you've had for hundreds of years.

Galahad looked right at Senna. "I do not relish ordering your death. I would not kill a woman, even a witch. But my archers will carry out that order, rather than let Loki take you and carry out his own terrible plans."

Senna instinctively took David's arm and pulled close to him.

"Anyone goes after Senna, they have to come through me,"

David said.

Galahad nodded. "You are bewitched, sir, I know the signs well. She would make you her champion and send you into battle against me."

"I'll fight you if I have to," David acknowledged.

"I have fought hundreds, perhaps more, perhaps thousands of battles of sword against sword, lance against lance. And yet I stand."

Galahad bowed slightly.

A neat, effective threat. No bragging. Just the simple statement that many had tried to kil him and he was not dead.

David tried out a tough-guy stare, but let it go when all he got back from Galahad was respectful patience. Then he said, "Look, you saved April. We owe you." He headed back to Senna.

"Gee, you must be relieved, huh? Him letting it go like that?"

Christopher asked Galahad. "Whew."

If Galahad caught the joke at David's expense, he didn't show it

"We face battle, outnumbered. We fight because it is our duty to resist evil, and because Loki's foul creatures, left to roam freely, would terrorize the peaceful farms and villages roundabout. I would be glad to have you as companions in arms.
